The Tigers Family sends its warmest wishes to club legend David Matthews who celebrates his 80th birthday on Easter Monday.

David made a club record of 502 first-team appearances in a Tigers career which lasted almost 20 years before also serving as coach, director and president in an association with the club dating back to 1955.

He was made life member in 2002 and has always been a prominent and popular member of the Tigers family.

"He epitomises all that is special about the Tigers," said club chairman Peter Tom, who played alongside David in the 1960s.

David's stats as a player were remarkable, breaking records as a try-scoring forward and amassing an appearance total which will never be beaten as well as playing for Leicestershire, Midlands Counties and the Barbarians.

Everyone at the Tigers wishes him a very Happy Birthday with his family and friends.

Tigers fans showed their support in a number of social media posts during the weekend and David also received a warm ovation from a 23,000-strong crowd at half-time in Saturday's win over Newcastle Falcons when a birthday message appeared on the big screens at Welford Road.
