Hero's return for Gibson on May 25

Former Tigers favourite Daryl Gibson will line up against his old colleagues as part of the Classic All Blacks squad at Welford Road on Sunday, May 25.

Gibson gained 19 caps for New Zealand and spent four seasons with Tigers before his move to Glasgow Warriors last summer.

Now he is to team up with fellow internationals Justin Marshall, Carlos Spencer, Carl Hayman and Marty Holah in the Classic All Blacks’ first-ever British fixture, against Tigers on his old stamping ground.

Gibson said: “It’ll be great to have the chance to run out at Welford Road again and I’m looking forward to it.

“The Classic All Blacks have put together a useful-looking squad and I came up through the age groups in New Zealand with a lot of those guys so it’ll be a great opportunity to catch up with them.

“I’m also looking forward to seeing the Tigers guys again. I had a great time at the club and I’m sure there will be a lot of banter on the pitch!”

The Classic All Blacks have made a few changes due to players’ club commitments in European competitions and also injury to Chris Jack, but Gibson heads the impressive list of additions.

Auckland Blues captain Troy Flavell and the backline talents of Pita Alatini and Isa Nacewa have been called up after the withdrawal of Rico Gear, Doug Howlett, Greg Rawlinson and Sam Tuitupo.

Nacewa has just signed a two-year deal with Leinster, while Tongan-born Alatini has 17 caps for New Zealand, competing at various times with Gibson and current Tigers centre Aaron Mauger for a place in the national squad.
