Intensity pleases Cockerill in Cup victory

Richard Cockerill welcomes new Leicester Tigers head coach Marcelo Loffreda to Welford Road this week boosted by an impressive EDF Energy Cup win over Cardiff Blues on Saturday.

With England's World Cup contingent back in the squad, Tigers scored five second-half tries to leap to the top of Pool B following a 42-20 victory over the Magners League leaders.

Loffreda flies in from Argentina in time to join the build-up to Saturday's opening Heineken Cup match of the season away to Leinster, and Cockerill said: "I can hand over with relative happiness. The players have done a great job so far this season.

"Cardiff are a good team and we had to defend well in the first half when they enjoyed a good share of possession. They kept the ball and kept us in our own half through most of the first half.

"We had to be patient, but we have some experienced guys out there and we gained territory in the second half and managed to put them under pressure.

"The intensity was great, the physicality was excellent, we just need to make fewer errors.

"Martin Corry led by example, the World Cup guys were outstanding across the board and, after four weeks out, Andy Goode came back in and played very well."

Loffreda comes to Welford Road fresh from taking Argentina to the bronze medals at the World Cup in France.

"I am looking forward to working with Marcelo, he is a world-class coach," said Cockerill.
