Jonny May claims Aviva Premiership award

Leicester Tigers wing Jonny May has today been named Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Month for October.

The 27-year-old May has been in sensational form for the Tigers, scoring seven tries in seven Aviva Premiership matches and 10 in nine games in all competitions.

World Cup winner Will Greenwood described him as an “absolute poacher with jet-heeled shoes”.

“Jonny has looked frighteningly fast and hungry for work with a real edge to his carries,” said former England centre Greenwood. “He has added some weight to a wiry frame but not lost any speed – a dangerous combination.

“He is loving playing outside George Ford and Matt Toomua and is an absolute poacher with jet-heeled shoes.”

A panel of experts judged May as the player who made the biggest impact in the league over the month, eventually beating the claims of Gloucester centre Henry Trinder and Exeter Chiefs back-rower Don Armand to the title.

The panel of media professionals comprised Nick Mullins (BT Sport), Alastair Eykyn (BT Sport), Mick Cleary (Daily Telegraph), Sarah Mockford (Rugby World), Jonny Fordham (The Sun), Jill Douglas (ITV Sport), Chris Jones (BBC 5 Live), David Rogers (Getty Images), Tom Hamilton (ESPN) and Paul Morgan (Premiership Rugby).

May wins a trophy and a £250 donation to the charity of his choice.

He is the third Tigers winner of the award, following Freddie Burns in November 2016 and Vereniki Goneva in February 2014.
