Jonny May set to miss opener

Leicester Tigers wing Jonny May could be a doubt for England’s autumn international against Argentina due to a hamstring injury.

After 10 tries in nine appearances for Tigers this season, May was named in the national squad preparing with head coach Eddie Jones for the Twickenham encounter with the Pumas on November 11.

Speaking to the media at the training camp in Portugal, England forwards coach Steve Borthwick said: “Jonny has a hamstring injury but he is doing everything he can to get fit as soon as possible. He is meticulous in his preparation to get fit.”

May has been joined by Wasps forward Joe Launchbury and Harlequins fly-half Marcus Smith in picking up injuries in camp, but Borthwick says any absentees would create opportunities for others.

“Whenever you have injuries it creates opportunity,” he said. “I’ve seen that first hand from when I was a player. You don’t want injuries to happen but it creates opportunity and, as you saw on the tour of Argentina, when that happened, players took it with both hands.”

Tigers players Ben Youngs, George Ford, Ellis Genge and Dan Cole are also with England at the training camp.
