More than a dozen former club captains were the first recipients of the new Official History of Leicester Tigers book at its launch at Welford Road on Wednesday.

The 500-page definitive history of the Tigers has been compiled by Stuart Farmer and David Hands, and published by the Rugby Development Foundation.

Former captains and members of the 100 Cap club joined other special guests in the European Lounge for the launch, while BBC Radio Leicester simultaneously hosted their Rugby Hour show in the Tigers stadium.

Martin Johnson, Geordan Murphy, David Matthews, Peter Wheeler, Paul Dodge and Neil Back were among the captains to receive their special leather-bound editions of the book. Fellow former captains John Allen, Kevin Andrews, Brian Hall, Mike Harrison, Steve Johnson, Bob Rowell and Ian Smith completed an impressive line-up.

They were joined at the event by 100-cap representatives including Harry Ellis, Garry Adey, John Duggan, Mike Gavins, Steve Hackney, Bleddyn Jones, Aadel Kardooni, Steve Kenney and Stuart Potter and for the launch of the new publication.

Farmer said: “When we put together the first book 21 years ago I termed it the ‘book of a lifetime’ but research has unearthed so many more details and stories and, of course, the last 20 years have been the most successful in the club’s history.

“The chance to put it together into the new Official History is incredible and it has been a great team effort.

“I hope everyone is as enthusiastic reading it as we were putting it together.”

The 500-page book provides the definitive history of the club, with player listings, season-by-season guide, results and scorers for every first-class fixture, and superb illustrations, using unpublished new material wherever possible.

Any profits from the book will benefit the Rugby Development Foundation, a charitable organisation backing grassroots rugby including the development of elite young players through the Tigers.

Book price is £45. The Foundation are in Final Whistle before and after Saturday’s home game against Ulster or check www.rugby-foundation.org.uk/products/tigers-book for more details of how to get your copy.
