University of Leicester recorded a Varsity double over De Montfort University in front of a big crowd at Welford Road on Wednesday evening.

The women’s match set the ball rolling on Varsity night at the home of Leicester Tigers, and Leicester centre Leah Thompson scored three of her team’s five tries in a 29-5 triumph.

Her midfield partner Sophie Figgins and wing Emma Miles were also on the scoresheet, with skipper Becky Flemming adding two conversions.

De Montfort captain Faye Goddard claimed her side’s only score in the closing minutes.

Leicester Tigers and England centre Dan Hipkiss presented the men’s trophy to University of Leicester skipper John Burns after a 27-13 win in front of a vocal crowd of more than 4,000.

Fellow forwards Harry Dance and Hugh Kelly grabbed the other tries, with fly-half John Knowels also kicking 12 points.

Adam Frost converted a try by centre Tom Frost on the stroke of half-time for De Montfort, but they were only able to add two penalties in the second period before Kelly got the final touch on a close-range drive in the closing seconds of the game to seal Leicester’s triumph.
