Leicestershire sides reach Prima Super 16s

The finals of the Prima Tiger Cup are taking shape after four Leicestershire teams booked their places in the Super 16s at Welford Road.

Four-time Prima Tiger Cup winners Hinckley reached the knockout stages along with Ashby, Market Harborough and Oadby Wyggestonians after qualifying from the Lutterworth RFC Festival on Sunday.

A total of 24 under-10s teams took part at Lutterworth, with Old Leamingtonians and Kettering only going out through count back.

Both teams have put themselves into contention for wildcard spots but will have to wait for the remaining festivals to be played.

Tigers players Harry and Charlie Thacker were in attendance at while their elder brother Dan, a Tigers rugby development officer, refereed. All three brothers played in the Prima Tiger Cup for Lutterworth as youngsters.

The winning teams will be joined at the home of Leicester Tigers for the Super 16s by Norfolk teams Holt and North Walsham, Tamworth in Staffordshire and Wolverhampton, who qualified from earlier tournaments.

This season’s Prima Tiger Cup, supported by Prima Solutions, is the biggest ever with more than 60 teams entered. The action continues this Sunday with another day of action at Newmarket RFC. Teams from Peterborough Lions, Bury St Edmunds, South Woodham Ferrers, Braintree, Rushden and Higham, Haywards Heath, Hadleigh, Cambridge, Wendens Ambo RFC, Ipswich YM RUFC and hosts Newmarket will be taking part.
