Matt Toomua has been chosen as the Lumbers Player of the Month award winner for March in a poll among Leicester Tigers supporters.

The result of the vote was revealed during half-time in Saturday’s derby match against Northampton Saints in front of a sell-out crowd at Welford Road.

Toomua finished top of the fans’ voting, with forwards Sione Kalamafoni and Graham Kitchener the other players on the shortlist.

The Australian was nominated for a second successive month as he steered the Tigers from fly-half in a bonus-point win at Worcester Warriors and reverted to centre for the clash with Wasps where he was just as impressive in defence with potential trysaving tackles on Thomas Young and Willie Le Roux in a vital 16-15 victory.

Toomua joins Harry Wells (twice), Valentino Mapapalangi, Jonny May, Dan Cole, Telusa Veainu and Greg Bateman as a winner of the monthly award this season.

Supported by High Street jewellers Lumbers and voted for by Tigers supporters, the Player of the Month award recognises the contribution of individual players to the team cause throughout the campaign.

Established in 1881, Lumbers jewellers have been at the heart of Leicester for more than 135 years – just like the Tigers – and are the sponsors of the club’s monthly player of the month award.

The Lumbers team offers unparalleled service and knowledge for clients at their new premises in High Street, Leicester, with an extensive range of services including jewellery and watch repairs, valuations and engraving.

Look out for the list of nominations for the April award next week and how you can place your vote soon.
