LV Cup win caps hectic week for Barbieri

Robert Barbieri says the LV= Cup win against London Irish was the perfect end to a demanding week after being away on international duty with Italy.

Barbieri returned to Leicester from Italy on Wednesday night after a couple of days training with the national team ahead of their autumn fixtures.

And first thing on Thursday morning he was straight into training at Oval Park in preparation for the LV= Cup trip to Madejski Stadium.

Barbieri scored Tigers’ crucial second try - his first in club colours - and led the defensive effort in an all-action performance as Leicester won 17-16.

“It’s been really busy this week with training, flights and stuff,” said Barbieri after the game. “On Wednesday I flew from Venice to Gatwick and then drove from Gatwick to Leicester. I got back at 10.30pm and had training on Thursday but it was nice to go back to Treviso to see some old friends and it was really nice to get the win at the end of the week.

“It was great defensive work by the team and it was good for all the young guys coming in. It was great for us as a team and good for me, because I haven’t been playing too much so it’s nice to have a win.

“The young players stepped up really well. They all played with confidence and they went hard, right to the end."
