Match preview: Tigers at Newcastle

Leicester Tigers head to the North-East on Sunday with Richard Cockerill "looking for a reaction" from the squad after defeat at Welford Road last weekend.

Tigers started the season with a bonus-point victory away to Gloucester but were beaten at home by Wasps in Round 2, being denied even a losing bonus point by a last-minute score from the visitors.

Falcons were also beaten in Round 2 at Bath after starting their season with a win over Sale Sharks at Kingston Park.

Newcastle’s 26-14 victory over Tigers at Kingston Park in February ended an 11-game losing streak in premiership rugby against Sunday’s rivals.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Looking back at last week, we did some good things but at critical moments we made errors and a good side punished us. We made unforced errors, especially in attack, and that hurt us.

“It was very disappointing to lose our first home game. We have a proud home record and we gave it up too easily.

“We have had to go back and deal with those things and our attention to detail is clearly  more focused. We need a reaction this weekend. Sunday will show whether we have put it right or not.”

Both sides announced their line-ups on Friday lunchtime, with Tigers confirming the return of Ben Youngs, Telusda Veainu, Owen Williams and Mike Williams. Former Leicester wing Vereniki Goneva is included in the Falcons line-up after moving north this summer, together with Tigers academy graduate Calum Green.

Referee on Sunday is JP Doyle, in charge of his 118th Premiership fixture.

Sunday’s game is scheduled for live TV coverage with BT Sport, or follow the updates on Tigers social media pages.

Tigers return to home turf in Round 4 next Sunday (3pm) when Bath are the visitors to Welford Road. Call in at the ticket office or phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2) between 9am and 5pm Monday to Saturday to book your place. Or click here to book online any time.
