Match preview: Tigers versus Falcons

Leicester Tigers head north-east to Newcastle Falcons on Friday evening in the opening game of Round 12 of the Aviva Premiership season.

Despite losing an unbeaten home record in league action stretching back to 2014 last weekend, Tigers make the trip with just three defeats in the opening half of the league season and sitting in third place in the table.

This will be a 20th visit to Kingston Park, with Tigers claiming 11 wins on previous trips.

Falcons have won their last four games on their home pitch since early December and have already beaten Bath and Harlequins at Kingston Park this season.

Looking to bounce back from the defeat by Sharks, Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Now we have to concentrate on getting it right against Newcastle.

“Sale played well, and fair play to them. We knew they would be a difficult side to play against. They played well and we didn’t play well enough.

“We missed opportunity to push on but that top-two spot is still there to be taken and there is still a lot of rugby to be played.

“Newcastle have had a couple of great results up there, against Bath and Quins. We know they are capable of beating sides, we are not going to go up there and get ambushed by how they’re going to play. They’re a good side, they work hard and if you don’t get it right you put yourself in a position to get beaten.

“We need to go there and put the things into action we didn’t last week.”

Last season’s Kingston Park encounter was settled with a late try from Tigers replacement Tommy Bell, with Mathew Tait playing a decisive role against his former club – and his young brother Alec. Click here for the match report.

Kick-off on Friday is at 7.45pm and tickets are still available from the host club.

This match is scheduled for live coverage on BT Sport, or you can keep up to date via the Tigers website and the club’s social media pages.
