Match preview: Tigers versus London Irish

Leicester Tigers return to home territory on Sunday afternoon (3pm) for a vital Aviva Premiership fixture against London Irish.

After three successive defeats, Tigers have dropped out of the play-off places and will be determined to make up that lost ground as the season reaches Round 14.

Irish, meanwhile, are desperate for points after slipping to the foot of the table, but they are still within striking distance of the clubs around them and pushed second-placed Exeter Chiefs hard in their Round 13 fixture last weekend.

The two clubs have met on 61 previous occasions, inclduing the opening day of this season when Tigers won at the Madejski Stadium with a try from Peter Betham on his debut. Tigers have won 51 of the previous encounters, including two cup finals at Twickenham – in the John Player Cup in 1980 and in the Premiership Final of 2009 when Jordan Crane emerged as the match winner. Irish have won twice at Welford Road – in 2003 and in 2014 when a penalty from Shane Geraghty provided the decisive points.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “We were very disappointed that we didn’t manage to close out the win at Quins. Our intent, physicality and mindset were good but we were inaccurate in executing what we’d worked on. Now we have to look to bounce back.

“Irish’s league position doesn’t show how well they have played and they will be desperate for the points for obvious reasons at the bottom of the table.

“But we will be desperate for the win too. We need to be mentally very tough and bring all of that grit and determination into the game.”

Kick-off on Sunday is at 3.00pm and match tickets are still available at the Tigers ticket office. Call in at Welford Road, phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2) or click here to book online. A print-at-home function is available on all online sales for home games, or pick up your tickets from the collection point outside the MET-Rx Stand on the way to the game.
