Match preview: Tigers versus Saracens

Figure image
Aviva Premiership league leaders and defending champions Saracens are the visitors to Welford Road this Sunday in round 17 of the league season.

Tigers sit one point and one place outside the top four with six fixtures remaining and  director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “It’s another big game against another side doing well in the league. We’ve beaten Exeter and lost to Wasps in the last two weeks, now it’s the league leaders.

“Every time you lose a game it puts more pressure on the next one and we have to work on getting our things right. We have to front up physically and try to play our game.”

Saracens arrive on the back of a win over London Irish last week in the first-ever Aviva Premiership game played outside England and have collected more points away from home than they have at their Allianz Park base so far this season.

The clubs have met on 78 previous occasions - including two Premiership Finals - with Leicester winning 53 to Saracens’ 19, including the first encounter earlier this season, with six games drawn. Tomorrow’s match is the 49th meeting at Welford Road, where the Tigers’ record is won 33, drawn 2, lost 4.

Teams were announced on Friday lunchtime, with Saracens missing a number of players with England and centre Duncan Taylor with Scotland. They do, though, welcome back hooker Schalk Brits. Tigers have three players with England and confirmed this week that hooker Tom Youngs will miss the rest of the season after surgery on a back injury. Owen Williams returns to the starting line-up and there is a return from injury for back-rower Opeti Fonua and hooker Greg Bateman who are named among the replacements.

Kick-off on Sunday will follow a Minute’s Applause at 3.15pm in memory of former Tigers centre/wing Seru Rabeni who died in Fiji this week.

Referee for Sunday is Mr J P Doyle.
