New faces, new season | Calum Green

All this week, we’re highlighting some of Leicester Tigers’ new recruits as part of our feature NEW BLOOD, SAME DNA, STILL TIGERS

But what can fans expect to see from the club’s new blood in 2019/20?

Rather than wait until the start of the season, we’re giving you the inside line on what some of the club’s most high profile acquisitions bring to the Tigers squad.

Following our profile of new centre Jaco Taute, we’re shifting our focus to the returning lock Calum Green.

Calum already knows what it means to wear the green, white and red, with 21 appearances in his first spell at Welford Road.

Originally from Norwich, the second-rower came through the Tigers Academy ranks and captained the young team in his final year before making a senior debut at the end of the 2008/09 season.

And he knows what it’s like to run out at Welford Road – having played in the historic win over world champions South Africa while still a teenager.

Since then, the powerful forward has gained experience at Yorkshire Carnegie and – most recently – at Newcastle Falcons, where he made more than 100 first-team experiences.

Calum has played a lot of senior rugby and has firmly established himself as a Premiership player. We think he will add a lot to the group.”

Geordan Murphy

In recent seasons Calum has been among Premiership Rugby’s leading locks, topping the stats for lineout wins last term with 84, and being named as one of the league’s top five tacklers, with 267 tackles made.

Not only is he an expert of his own set-piece, but is also a noted poacher of opposition ball, so expect to see him hoisted high into the Welford Road sky plenty of times this season.

And while Green might be a touch ‘shorter’ than the towering Will Spencer, standing at six foot four, he is bound to be an abrasive addition to Geordan Murphy’s pack in 2019/20.

Leicester is where my career started and to have the opportunity to return was too good an opportunity to let go by. Geordie is so passionate about the club and I’m looking forward to getting Tigers back to the top.”
