New faces, new season | Hanro Liebenberg

In our third profile edition, this Tigers summer signing definitely turned some heads when it was announced he’d be joining the club back in July.

We’re taking an inside look at why Tigers supporters should be excited about some of the club’s latest recruits.

Next up, is a young South African who has swapped Pretoria for Welford Road in the shape of Hanro Liebenberg.

The highly-rated youngster arrives at Welford Road with his best years ahead of him at just 23 years of age.

Standing at 6’6 and well over 17 stone, Hanro is a powerful back-row with strong all-round attributes.

An effective ball carrier, he featured more prominently at No.8 for his former side Super Rugby’s Bulls before a short loan spell at Stade Francais last season.

Liebenberg brings extra physicality to a new-look Tigers back five alongside fellow arrivals Jordan Taufua and Tomas Lavanini. Add into the mix Kalamafoni, Reffell, Spencer, Thompson, Wells, Denton and new boys Calum Green and Jordan Coghlan, as the saying goes nothing breeds success like competition.

On the ball, Hanro’s uncompromising and bullish running will help Tigers make the yards up the pitch whilst off the ball his strong defence in the breakdown and the clear out will reassure Leicester’s backline.

Hanro is an aggressive ball-carrier and a physical player around the field, in the best traditions of South African back-row players.”

A natural leader on the pitch, if selected at the back of the scrum, the former Springboks Under-20s captain will need no invitation to pick up and carry when nearing the opposition’s touchline.

“I like ball in hand, I like to take on defenders and I’m very comfortable in contact, I won’t be shying away from the physical aspect of the game.”
