New leaders in The Big Boot

A crowd of more than 21,000 cheered a group of half-time record-breakers at Welford Road on Saturday.

Players from Nottinghamshire rugby club Meden Vale took centre stage at half-time as they took on The Big Boot.

On a week off from their own league fixtures, the Meden Vale made a group booking to share matchday with the Tigers and 10 players took part in The Big Boot competition on the pitch.

Backed by the encouragement of the home crowd, they made five clean catches to not only take over at the top of this season’s leaderboard but also beat the best figure from last season.

The Big Boot, sponsored by De Montfort University, fires a rugby ball high into the Welford Road sky, challenging teams to show their catching skills, with a jackpot cash prize for a cleansweep.

Jonathan Pettinger was among the successful catchers and said: “It’s a bit nerve-wracking when you get out there but it was great fun and I’m glad we did so well. And the guy we’d expect to knock-on made the catch too, which is great.

“We had a league win against our local rivals last week and now this, so it has been a good couple of weeks. I’m sure we’ll still be talking about it back at training this week too.”

The Big Boot is available only to group bookings, all competitors must be over 16 years of age. For more information contact the group sales team in the Tigers ticket office. Phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2).
