Hundreds of young players took part in rugby games and competitions as the Tigers roadshow team enjoyed two action-packed days at the Royal Norfolk Show.

Visitor numbers to the event on Wednesday and Thursday approached the 100,000 mark with the Tigers mobile unit The Maul proving a popular attraction.

A huge inflatable rugby pitch in front of The Maul was the setting for a series of exercises with the Tigers community team. Hundreds of players, including the Lakenham Hewett RFC girls team, took part in Rugby Fit, circuit activities to get people fit for rugby, and games of touch and tag rugby.

The Tigers roadshow team took on the Royal Anglian Regiment in a game of touch rugby while club mascot, Leicester The Tiger, enjoyed some of the sights of the show, including displays by the Lotus F1 team and Jaguar.

Visitors to The Maul also attempted to win a family ticket to the opening game of next season on Saturday, September 3 against Exeter Chiefs at Welford Road with the Tigers interactive quiz, the Spot The Ball Wall and the Speedpass Challenge.

“It was a fantastic two days and a hugely successful show,” said Chris Rose, Tigers head of brand development. “It was great to see so many people getting involved, having a go at the rugby challenges and really enjoying themselves.

“Leicester Tigers have very close links with Norfolk. We have a large number of season ticket holders in the county and the likes of Ben Youngs, Dan Hipkiss and Ben Pienaar have come from Norfolk to play for the first team at Welford Road

“We have our own dedicated Norfolk rugby development officer, Justin Loveridge, who runs our Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme in the county, taking tag into schools and developing links with their local club.

“And Tigers also run a series of rugby courses at local clubs in Norfolk and many of the clubs enter teams to compete in our junior tournaments, the Prima Tiger Cup and Land Rover Premiership Cup, so it was great to be able to meet Tigers fans old and new outside the rugby season.”

Tigers will be back in Norfolk later this month when the community team hold a rugby course at Swaffham RFC (July 25-29). Tigers Rugby Courses will also be held at Diss RFC (August 1-5) and North Walsham RFC (August 22-26).

Tigers Rugby Courses are led by former players including ex-captain and coach Ian 'Dosser' Smith, double Heineken Cup winner Glenn Gelderbloom and ex-hooker Troy Thacker. Players taking part will be challenged in all aspects of their game and can expect a hot meal each day, a Tigers Rugby Course T-shirt, rugby ball and water bottle and a ticket to a selected first-team game at Welford Road.
