O'Connor happy to be back and contributing

Brendon O’Connor marked his return for Tigers with a brilliant offload for Matt Toomua’s first try for the club – and admitted he was not sure where it came from.

O’Connor burst through the London Irish defence to create the opportunity for Toomua to open the scoring for Tigers in Saturday’s 19-15 Aviva Premiership victory at Welford Road.

O’Connor said: “I don’t know where the pass came from. I don’t pull that out very often. It was just nice to contribute to the try."

The back rower made 15 tackles against Irish, the most by a Tigers player in the game, the official statistics show. The OPTA Rugby Rankings also show that he won a turnover to take his total in the Aviva Premiership to eight, the most in the Tigers squad.

He added: “It’s nice to be back. I haven’t played for a few weeks, so it was nice to have a run around.

“The lungs were blowing a bit in that first half but I was happy to be back among the boys and trying to contribute to the team where I can.

“It was good to get the win. It was probably not the scoreline we were hoping for but we take the win. If you have to win ugly then you take the points, go away, look at the tape and see where you can improve. We will keep working hard and it will come right.

"We have talked about staying tight, staying close . Moving forward, hopefully we have turned that corner.”
