First Tigers try is one for scrapbook, says Owen

Gareth Owen joked he was out on the wing to get his breath back when he scored his first try for Leicester Tigers.

Owen plucked Joe Ford’s crossfield  kick out of the air before holding off Marland Yarde to score Tigers’ crucial third try in their 35-27 bonus-point win against Sale Sharks on Sunday.

Watch the try again on the LTTV highlights below.

It was Owen’s first try for the club on his third start, and afterwards he quipped: “To be honest, I was out there having a breather.

“I did call it but to be honest I didn’t realise I could jump that high – it’s not a bad try, one for the scrap book!

“It was a big shift from us. We come out and weren’t quite on it in the first half but we turned the cogs in the second and really put pressure on Sale, making them make mistakes and capitalised.”

Tigers are back at Welford Road this Saturday when they host Worcester Warriors in the Aviva Premiership.

And Owen is urging the Tigers fans to reproduce the noise that roared them on to victory against Sale.

“Hopefully we can have another big crowd,” he said. “It really is the 16th man.”
