Work is underway to prepare the Welford Road pitch for the start of the 2014/15 campaign.

The home of Leicester Tigers hosted its final rugby action of this season on Friday when PJ Care won the National Corporate 7s.

Now Tigers head groundsman Steve Packwood and his team, with the help of Cosby-based Hewitt Sportsturf, have swung into action to prepare the pitch in time for the pre-season double header with Doncaster Knights and Cardiff Blues on Friday, August 29.

The surface is being scarified before the addition 60 tonnes of top dressing. The pitch will then be seeded and Packwood anticipates it will receive its first cut within two weeks.

The pitch will be covered to protect it from festival-goers at the Leicester Music Festival on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26.

Tinie Tempah and Labrinth headline the two-day festival, which will include performances by Professor Green, Katy B and The Saturdays and UB40, Billy Ocean and Diversity as well as many more. Tickets are still available by clicking here.

Packwood said: “The surface will be totally covered for the festival. It won’t have any effect on the pitch.”
