Fly-half Jeremy Staunton kicked four penalties on his debut to help Tigers claim a bonus point from a 15-12 defeat at Sale Sharks on Friday night.
Murphy said Tigers made too many mistakes in the Guinness Premiership opener at Edgeley Park but that there were still positives to take from the game.
“It was a disappointing start to the season,” said the Tigers full-back. “We played some good football but we made some unforced errors at times. We have to clean those up.
“There are plenty of positives. The way we played in the last 20 minutes was spot-on. We kept coming back and didn’t let our heads go down at any stage.”
Tigers travel to Harlequins on Saturday before their first home game of the Guinness Premiership season in front of a record league crowd at Welford Road.
