Positive start to Saxons season

Leicester Tigers wing Tom Varndell says the win for England Saxons at Welford Road on Friday evening was “full of positives”.

“Throughout the team there were some really positive performances,” said Varndell who scored two of England’s four tries in a 31-13 victory over Ireland A.

“We had only been together for a few days and it takes time for a team to click together so it was good to get the win. Jordan Crane led really well from the front and, considering we’re such a young team, I think our average age is 23, I think we showed that hopefully the future is looking good for English rugby. Hopefully there are a few players who will be pushing for a place in the senior squad.”

The Saxons took the game beyond their visitors when Varndell touched down twice in the second half. It was a thrilling achievement for the Tigers winger who was joined in the Saxons side by club colleagues Crane and Ollie Smith.

“I love playing at Welford Road, the support was great,” he said. “It is my job to score tries. I had a couple of opportunities in the first half and I was disappointed not to finish them but I was happy with the two in the second half after some great work by the team.”
