Preview: Tigers versus Exeter Chiefs

It's fourth versus second in the Aviva Premiership table at Welford Road on Sunday afternoon as Leicester Tiger host Exeter Chiefs.

Under boss Rob Baxter, Chiefs have been in the top two in the table all season, while Tigers returned to the play-off places with a home win over London Irish last weekend.

This fixture signals the start of a run of games against the three sides above Tigers in the league table and director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Chiefs have been going well, the table doesn’t lie after 14 rounds. They’ve been consistent in the top two. They have a strong set-piece, scrum and lineout drive, and we need to manage that.

“We’ve been getting some bodies back and we’ll need them with games against Exeter, Wasps and Saracens – the three teams above us – in the next three weeks.

“We are into March now and the season finishes in May. We need to be in the business end. We need to be at our best.”

The clubs have met on 51 previous occasions, though only 11 of these have been in league competition, with the Chiefs reaching the top flight in 2010. Fourteen previous encounters have been at Welford Road, with Tigers winning 11 to Chiefs’ two, with on draw.

International second-rower Geoff Parling, who is now an Exeter player, provided the decisive score in a 25-15 victory for Tigers in this fixture last season, with Freddie Burns kicking the other 20 points. Click here to re-live the action from that meeting.

As well as Parling, the Chiefs squad also includes former Tigers forwards Thomas Waldrom and Julian Salvi.

Kick-off on Sunday is at 3.00pm and match tickets are still available at the Tigers ticket office.
