Cheika praises fans for role in win over Sale

Michael Cheika was not only keen to praise his players for their efforts in the bonus-point win over Sale Sharks but the Leicester Tigers faithful as well.

Speaking after the match, the Leicester Tigers Head Coach said: "We wanted it more in the second half than we did in the first, especially defensively, where we were able to apply pressure.

"It was definitely a finals level intensity from the off, you could tell. So that was a really good experience for us as we haven't had to perform in that environment. To have the crowd going like that was crazy, it was great.

"I haven't been here long in this job but the crowd has been great throughout, although not like that tonight. That was the best I have experienced this season, they played their part and it was great for us, great for the lads.

"Having experienced it on the other side, as an opposition team, I can tell you it is a big thing and I'm glad I am on this side of it now."

Cheika's side went into the changing rooms at the break trailing Sale by ten points, 16-26, but came out in the second half and scored four tries to make it three wins on the bounce and head into the final two games of the campaign in second place.

When quizzed on what the difference was in the second half, Cheika replied: "At half time we had our heads down a bit when we probably shouldn't have."

"So we just said, we have got to find a way to master this opponent, and so get back out there and do it. That's what the lads did."

On the Sharks, he added: "They are a good team and they played really well tonight, across the board. They are going to be hard to beat, no matter what happens going forward."

Cheika and his side head to league leaders Bath Rugby next weekend in the penultimate round of the regular season and the Tigers boss knows a challenge awaits at The Rec.

"There have been such big swings in performances from all teams in this league, bar Bath who have been consistent," he said.

"We saw today, they have rotated their team for the game away to Bristol in Cardiff this weekend and so will be coming at us with all their artillery. But, that's good for us, we need to go into those environments. We know they are the best team in the competition, so we just have to go at them with everything we've got."

After the trip to Bath, Tigers host Newcastle Falcons in the final regular season fixture of the 24/25 Premiership campaign.
