Round 13 Reaction: Steve Borthwick

Steve Borthwick believes a lack of “efficiency” from his side proved costly in a three-point defeat in Coventry on Sunday.

Speaking after the match, the Leicester Tigers Head Coach praised Wasps for their execution in the Round 13 match-up.

“All credit goes to Wasps,” said Borthwick.

“They deserved the victory with the way they played today. They took their chances well.

“From our perspective, I don’t think we were efficient enough today, when we created chances we didn’t convert them into points,” he said.

“There were opportunities to go ahead, opportunities to win the game and we didn’t make the most of those this afternoon.”

The defeat saw an unbeaten run of eleven league fixtures, as well as two from two in both European and domestic Cup competitions, come to an end.

“We leave Coventry today disappointed with not getting the win, of course, but what we must do now is learn from today and ensure we are a better team from this experience”

When asked about the first taste of defeat for this Tigers team, Borthwick was quick to point out consistency in approach remained key for he and his players.

“We have never discussed it, so it won’t be something we look back on now,” said the Tigers boss.

“It is repetitive for anyone reading it, I am sure, but our focus has always been and will remain on the next performance.

“We leave Coventry today disappointed with not getting the win, of course, but what we must do now is learn from today and ensure we are a better team from this experience.”

Looking back on what the unbeaten run means to the squad, the Tigers Head Coach went further back than this campaign - before clearly stating there was nothing to celebrate.

“I think back to a year ago, even less maybe, and this was a club that hoped to get a win each weekend,” added Borthwick.

“Now, here we are, disappointed that we did lost and looking immediately at what needs improving to be better next week.

“That is the growth we have had up until this point but, as anyone here would tell you, there is much, much more to learn and much, much more to do as a group.

“What is shows is that we have made changes, positive changes, but that is all we have done.”

Tigers now begin preparations for a trip to Ireland to face Connacht in Round 3 of the 21/22 Heineken Champions Cup.
