Record ticket sales for Anglo-Welsh pool stage

The derby match between Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints set an Anglo-Welsh Cup attendance record at Welford Road on Saturday.

As the last few tickets were snapped up by supporters on Saturday morning, the Round 3 fixture between the East Midlands neighbours attracted a stadium capacity of 25,849 ticket sales.

This represents a record attendance for the tournament outside of semi-finals and finals at the Millennium Stadium and Twickenham, beating the previous mark of 24,000 set at Welford Road for the derby tie with Saints in January 2015 when tries from Sebastian de Chaves and Laurence Pearce saw the home side through to a 17-8 win.

After welcoming a total of more than 100,000 supporters over four successive games in December and early January, the figure for Saturday is another show of strength and commitment from the Tigers Family.

Leicester Tigers chairman Peter Tom CBE said: “A sell-out for an Anglo-Welsh Cup tie is a fantastic tribute to the supporters and also to the club’s ticket office and corporate sales teams, especially in such a challenging season.

“Welford Road is an iconic stadium and the strength of support here is known throughout rugby.

“We fully understand the frustrations of supporters with results recently but their support for the team is crucial.”

Tickets are now on sale for home games in the Aviva Premiership against Gloucester (Saturday, February 11, 3.00pm), Bristol Rugby (Saturday, February 18, 3.00pm), Exeter Chiefs (Friday, March 3, 7,45pm) and Newcastle Falcons (Saturday, April 15, 3.00pm).

Book in person at Welford Road, phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2) or online.
