Reffell to captain Wales U20s

Tommy Reffell will captain Wales U20s in their Six Nations opener against Scotland in Colwyn Bay on Friday (8.15pm kick-off).

Leicester Tigers back-rower Reffell has been given the captaincy after leading Wales U18s in South Africa during last summer. He made his Tigers senior debut in the narrow Anglo-Welsh Cup defeat at Bath during November.

It is a significant honour for Reffell, who will be making his Wales U20s debut and does not turn 19 until April.

He is the fifth Tigers player to be selected to play in the first round of fixtures in this season's U20s Six Nations after England named Ben White, Sam Lewis, Tom Hardwick and Jordan Olowofela in their squad.

Head coach Jason Strange said: "We've got a lot of promising youngsters in there – many of them still eligible for U18s –but we had a very young squad last season too, which means we can benefit from the return of players like Ben Jones and Rhys Carre.

"We saw what a lot of these new boys are capable of during their time with the U18s last year, so it's up to them to step up and show us what they can do in the U20s shirt in front of what is a terrific crowd in North Wales."
