Relay for Life proves huge success

The first-ever Relay for Life Leicester proved to be a huge success last weekend, with the Welford Road event so far raising a staggering £50,000 for Cancer Research UK.

More than 30 teams, including two from Tigers, completed laps of the pitch for close to 24 hours, with a Harvey Ingram team winning the prize for the most innovative fund-raising efforts.

Approximately 1,000 people came through the Welford Road gates for what was superb community effort from all involved.

Tigers legend Martin Johnson and the Lord Mayor of Leicester formally opened the event, which also included music from local bands, choirs and singers, as well  a food market, coffee outlet, face-painting and information on cancer detection.

Tigers players also turned out in force, with the likes of George Chuter, Seru Rabeni , Boris Stankovich, Dave Young, Ian Humphreys and Matt Smith all in attendance. Injured England flanker Lewis Moody even did his bit, hobbling around the pitch on crutches, with his new-born baby strapped to his chest!

TAG rugby activities helped pass the time, while a Tai Chi session attempted to put a spring back in the step of the walkers at 6am on Sunday morning.

A Candle of Hope ceremony gave fund-raisers the chance to remember loved ones lost to the disease or to celebrate those who have successfully recovered from cancer.

A big thank-you must go to everyone involved in the event, from organisers to participants, without whom the £50,000 total would have been an impossible task.
