The club has been saddened to learn of the death of former Leicester Tigers prop Rex Skelton, aged 78.

Born in Leicester in July 1931, Rex was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School and played for Old Wyggestonians before making 198 first-team appearances for Tigers between 1956 and 1970.

He represented Devonport Services, Marines Services and the Royal Navy during his national service, and played for Leicestershire, as well as being selected as a Midland Counties reserve.

“Rex was tighthead prop and captain of the Swifts when I played my first game for the club,” said Tigers rugby director Peter Wheeler.

“He was a great man of the Club, teaching new players not just about the game but also about the traditions, work ethic and history associated with Leicester Tigers. We will miss him.”

The funeral service will be held at St John the Baptist Church in Billesdon on Monday (April 26). Family flowers only, donations to the British Heart Foundation.
