RPA award for Matt Hampson

The Rugby Players' Association has announced that Matt Hampson's extraordinary achievements will be recognised at the 2015 RPA Players' Award.He has been confirmed as the recipient of the RPA Blyth Spirit Award, in association with Towergate Insurance, at the awards on May 13 at Battersea Evolution, London.   This year marks the 10th anniversary of Matt’s accident, which left him paralysed from the neck down and breathing via the aid of a ventilator.   Matt has shown incredible courage and established the Matt Hampson Foundation which gives support to others who have suffered catastrophic injuries.   He said: “I’m extremely humbled to be the recipient of this award. Ever since my injury, the support I have received from the RPA and Restart Rugby has made a huge difference to my life. It’s great to be part of an event that raises such valuable funds for Restart Rugby and all the players the charity helps.”   RPA Group chief exective Damian Hopley said: “Matt is a true inspiration to all of us and the determination he has shown since his accident has been nothing short of incredible.   “The fact that he has now focused his energy into his Foundation and helping others who have suffered similar injuries to himself is testament to his remarkable character and why he is so deserving of this award.”   The RPA Blyth Spirit Award in association with Towergate Insurance is given to an individual or group who has shown remarkable courage in the face of adversity, and is voted for by the RPA Players’ Board.
