Rucking around the Christmas tree

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas at Welford Road after the club’s main Christmas tree was put up on the plaza in front of the Holland & Barrett Stand.

It was an early start for the Leicester Tigers maintenance and ground staff, who worked through the morning alongside Cadeby Tree Trust, who delivered the tree, to put up the nine-metre Blue Spruce.

The tree, which is 25 years old, was hoisted into the air with the help of a crane and then moved into place before the festive lights were added.

Ed Mowe, Tigers head groundsman, said: “It was an early start for the team and took a good hour for the tree to finally be lifted into place. Once up, it’s about securing the tree and making sure it won’t go anywhere.

“I remember being told that, back in the day, this would have all been done by hand! Luckily we have access to some of the best kit around, including STIHL chainsaw’s which helped in preparing the trunk. Once up, it’s all about the decoration so we hope the fans are proud of it.”

And keep an eye out for the tree on matchdays, including the Champions Cup game against Munster Rugby and the Aviva Premiership fixture with Saracens on Christmas Eve. Match tickets are on general sale now. Click below to book your place.
