Young rugby players from Christ the King Catholic Primary School have been crowned Santander Alliance & Leicester TAG champions for the Leicester city area.

Teams from Christ the King, Montrose, Humberstone Junior and Holy Cross Catholic Primary Schools were at Welford Road, home of defending English champions Leicester Tigers, on Saturday for the finals of the city area programme.

Christ the King and Holy Cross made it through to the final, played before Tigers hosts Bath Rugby in a Guinness Premiership match.

Tigers community manager Scott Clarke said: “We congratulate all four teams on making to the finals day and we saw some excellent games along the way.

“These teams are all new to rugby and, thanks to the support of Santander Alliance & Leicester’s Tag programme, they have been able to enjoy picking up the individual skills and developing their teamwork.

“The schools are then also able to transfer those skills to other groups in future years, which is a big part of the Santander Alliance & Leicester Tag initiative.

“More than 100 primary schools have taken part in Leicestershire and Rutland this season and we are very grateful for the support of Santander Alliance & Leicester for making the TAG programme the biggest and best grass-roots schools sports programme of its kind.”

All four finalist teams enjoyed a parade of the Welford Road pitch at half-time in Saturday’s game attended by nearly 23,000 supporters and the presentations were performed by Keith Litherland from Santander Commercial Mortgages, Andrew Dacey from Aylestonians RFC, hosts of the City festival, and Leicester's England and Lions international scrum-half Harry Ellis.

Christ the King return to Welford Road on May 8, the day of Tigers’ final fixture of the regular league season, when they compete against the winners of the Rutland and Melton Mowbray Partnership finals to decide the overall 2010 champions of the Santander Alliance & Leicester TAG Programme.
