Schools have a ball with Nottingham Tag Rugby

Primary school pupils have visited Market Harborough RFC to take part in the first Nottingham Building Society Tag Rugby festival of the season.

More than 120 students from six schools took to the field for a day of competitive tag rugby as the pupils put their new skills to the test.

The schools involved included Church Langton Primary, Foxton Primary, Great Bowden Academy, Market Harborough CofE, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary and Wilbarston CofE.

Each school is taking part in The Nottingham’s Tag Rugby programme led by Leicester Tigers coaches in a six-week programme which aims to introduce kids in primary schools to the game while also promoting the benefits of exercise.

For many of the pupils, this was their first experience of playing rugby and it is programmes like this, with the support of Tigers partners uncluding The Nottingham, which help to develop grassroots rugby across the region.

Dom Owen, rugby development officer at Tigers who organises the programme, said: “The Nottingham Tag Rugby programme is in its third year and each year we continue to see more and more schools involved.

“The aim is to give primary school pupils the opportunity to learn about rugby, learn new skills and introduce them to the rugby family.

“We’ve welcomed pupils from all over the region since the programme began and it’s incredible to watch their development over the six weeks, which culminate in a fun festival for all.”

Vicky Hall, sponsorship and events manager at The Nottingham, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership with Leicester Tigers for the third year and once again sponsoring the school tag rugby programme.

“At The Nottingham, we are committed to supporting grassroots sports, especially those that make a difference to communities throughout our trading area.

“Every year our tag rugby programme involves more than 2,000 children in 50 schools throughout Leicestershire, giving children across the county the chance to learn and get involved in a new sport.”
