Slater leads England to tour victory

Ed Slater led England to a 38-7 victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch on Tuesday, the opening win of the tour to New Zealand.

Leicester Tigers lock Slater, one of four uncapped players in England's starting line-up, came through the full 80 minutes at the AMI Stadium.

England scored four first-half tries to lead 26-7 at the break.

Scores from Joe Gray and Ben Foden provided an early 12-0 lead and, after a reply from Matt Todd on 20 minutes, centre Brad Barritt quickly added another as England took a 19-7 advantage.

Slater played a big part in the next try, ripping ball from a maul to attack the Crusaders line and, when possession was recycled, Alex Goode scored on the right. Danny Cipriani’s third conversion of the evening made it 26-7, a lead the tourists retained up to half-time.

Anthony Watson added a fifth try midway through the second half and, as coach Stuart Lancaster spread game-time through the 23-man squad, replacement Chris Pennell touched down in the last minute for the final score.
