Matt Smith is looking for Leicester Tigers to consolidate their opening round victory in the Champions Cup when they travel to Benetton Treviso this weekend.Tigers kicked off their European campaign with a 33-20 bonus-point victory over defending French champions Stade Francais at Welford Road on Friday evening.
Smith scored his first try of the season at a crucial moment right on half-time to give Tigers the lead for the first time in the game, after Vereniki Goneva had opened the scoring shortly before.
Brendon O’Connor and Ben Youngs also crossed to give Tigers the maximum five points while denying Stade any match points.
And Smith, who celebrated his 30th birthday on Sunday, says Tigers will be looking to build on that at Treviso’s Stadio di Monigo on Saturday.
“It’s the Champions Cup and we knew we would have to lift our game,” said Smith. “We have targeted nine points from these first two games so we know we have go to Treviso and go again or this game will count for nothing.
“We have played Treviso a lot in Europe. A few years ago it took Alesana Tuilagi to score in the final minute to get a victory over there.
“They are a passionate bunch so it will be tough. We have a few Italians in our squad and they will be looking forward to going over there.”
