Solo try gives Shane redemption

Shane Jennings delivered a hammer blow to Heineken Cup rivals Llanelli Scarlets on Saturday but pointed a finger at himself for the score which gave the Welsh side the lead during the second half.

The hard-working flanker picked up a neat chip kick from fly-half Andy Goode to race through the Scarlets defence and score in front of the visiting supporters in the Kop end of the Walkers Stadium in the 52nd minute.

It was perfectly timed but, in Jennings' own words, it also made up for conceding a score at the other end.

"We thought the chip was on and we called it," said Jennings after his third Heineken Cup try of the season. "The ball bounced nicely for me, the full-back slipped and I was able to get through.

"I had made the mistake in letting their hooker in to score and when you have done that you want to rectify it immediately."

Jennings is undoubtedly being harsh on himself, but that try on the left from Matthew Rees, converted from the touchline by Stephen Jones, had given the Scarlets the lead for the first - and only - time in the game at 17-16. Two minutes later, though, Jennings pounced and Tigers were on their way again.

"They probably thought they were back in the mix and if they had got another score or a couple of penalties then it might have been a different story," he said. "But we did not let it worry us and from the kick-off we were looking to get some momentum going again. The try was important in giving us that bit of belief as well."

From there, it was Tigers' day with Goode adding a penalty and then converting the final try from Louis Deacon to seal a tremendous victory against a Scarlets side who came through a difficult pool unbeaten and then dumped defending champions Munster out of the competition in the quarter-final.
