South Africans go head to head

Heyneke Meyer will pit his wits against an old acquaintance when he sends out his Leicester Tigers team to face Benetton Treviso on Saturday.

While Tigers look to follow up their opening-day win over the Ospreys, their Italian hosts will want to build on an encouraging performance against Perpignan in France last weekend.

Treviso are coached by Franco Smith, a man Meyer knows well.

“I coached Franco at the Bulls and coached against him at Free State,” says Meyer. “There are also other South Africans in the Treviso squad.

“They will be proud team, they want to play well and they will be physical.

“It is important for us to be on top of the game in every game because this is a tough competition.

“We played well against the Ospreys but that game has gone now, we need the same focus for the next game.

“We need to execute our game-plan 100 per cent and take the same mentality that we did against the Ospreys.

“It has been a good start to the season so far but there are still improvements to be made.

“The great thing about this team is that the standards are so high that it they will not be jumping up and down after one win. They know they can play much better. They keep pushing themselves and I like that.”
