Special Olympians visit Welford Road

Special Olympics competitors and coaches have enjoyed a guided tour behind the scenes at Welford Road.

The South East Judo team were shown around the famous ground including the changing rooms, press areas and corporate hospitality boxes and had their photograph taken with the Guinness Premiership trophy.

Kirstie Ralf, the South East Judo team’s assistant coach, said: “I am a big sports fan and the tour has been amazing. The ground is incredible and the new stand looks fantastic.

“We have had a really good week. The atmosphere in Leicester has been really good.

“As a team we have done really well. We have won four gold, three silver and four bronze and in the team competitions we got two gold and a silver and a bronze."

Competitor Liam Duhig is a big Tigers fan and even has the nickname Tiger.

“I have enjoyed the tour big time,” he said. “Holding the Guinness Premiership trophy has capped the week for me.”

The Special Olympics is the third member of the Olympics family. Held every four years the National Summer Games provide a week of Olympic-styled sports competition for learning disabled athletes across the country. More than 21 sports have been be represented during games week.
