Thacker wins Premiership Try of the Season

Harry Thacker's stunning score away to Northampton Saints was last night crowned the Try of the Season at the annual Aviva Premiership Awards dinner in central London last night.

A total of 616 tries were scored across the regular season with Thacker’s individual effort in the 34-20 victory at Franklin’s Gardens in Round 20 voted the Citizen Try of the Season.
 
Peter Betham’s try against Gloucester Rugby at Welford Road in Round 19 was on the six-try shortlist, but it was Thacker who collected the award at the Park Lane Hilton to add to his Tigers supporters’ and players’ Player of the Year gongs.

Thacker missed out on the Land Rover Discovery of the Year Award, for the best Under-23 player in the Aviva Premiership. The Tigers hooker was one of six players nominated with the award going to Maro Itoje (Saracens).
 
Telusa Veainu, Tigers’ leading try scorer in the Aviva Premiership this season, was named in the BT Sport Aviva Premiership Rugby Dream Team.

Saracens and England full-back Alex Goode was named Aviva Premiership Rugby Player of the Season, while his boss Mark McCall was the Guinness Director of Rugby of the Season for a third time.
 
England back-rower Harriet Millar-Mills, who was part of the Lichfield Ladies team that played Wasps Ladies at Welford Road in October, was named the Women’s Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, the first time it has been presented at the Aviva Premiership Awards.

The first award of the night went to John O’Donnell (Sale Sharks) who was named Aviva Community Player of the Season.
 
Elliot Frewen (Newport Gwent Dragons) was the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Player of the Series and George Smith (Wasps) was the Green Flag Forward of the Season. Thomas Waldrom was the Trivento Top Try Scorer while his Exeter Chiefs teammate Gareth Steenson lifted the Gilbert Golden Boot Award.
