Tigers have forwarded £20,000 to a hardship fund in Christchurch after sales of wristbands, the collection of donations and online auctions run by the club’s Kiwi players.
The cash will be used to assist players who would otherwise struggle to enjoy their rugby due to the financial implications of the earthquake.
Hamish Riach, chief executive of Canterbury Rugby, says: “Just want to thank you again for the tremendous gesture from the Tigers in making the donation to rugby here. It is very generous and very much appreciated.
“I am also very pleased that the release of the story acknowledging the donation is getting significant air-time here, which is a fitting and appropriate acknowledgement of the care the Tigers and their fans have shown the rugby community here.
“Thanks a million!”
Former Tigers player of the year Aaron Mauger played a major part in identifying the fund for Tigers to send their donations, while fellow former Leicester players Jamie Hamilton and Daryl Gibson are also on the staff at the Crusaders in the affected area of New Zealand.
