Guy sets Lumbers Player of the Month record

Leicester Tigers supporters have chosen back-rower Guy Thompson as the latest Lumbers Player of the Month, beating out teammates George Ford and Will Spencer.

Thompson, who took more votes on the Lumbers website than any other winner of the award so far this season, was announced as the poll-topper at half-time of Saturday’s league clash with Bristol Bears.

Fans picked out Thompson from a shortlist of three players selected by head coach Geordan Murphy following the back-rower’s performances in Rounds 18 and 19 of the Gallagher Premiership season.

He joins club captain Tom Youngs and fellow forwards Harry Wells and David Denton plus backs George Worth, Jonah Holmes, Ben White and George Ford in scooping the monthly title so far in 2018/19.

Thompson featured off the bench at home to Exeter, but it was on the trip to Kingston Park where Thompson made the biggest difference.

Setting up Jonny May’s opening try and bagging two of his own – including a 60-metre interception score – the Tigers forward was a real menace for Falcons’ defence before making a crucial last-minute turnover on his own line to cement victory on Tyneside.

Supported by High Street jewellers Lumbers and voted for by Tigers supporters, the monthly award recognises the contributions of individual players to the team throughout the campaign.

Each month, fans will be asked to pick their top performer from a shortlist of three players nominated by the Tigers coaching staff. The player with the most votes on the Lumbers website will win the award, which will be presented on the Welford Road pitch during half-time of a first-team fixture.
