Thorn hails 'gold' Welford Road atmosphere

Brad Thorn has hailed the Leicester Tigers fans and what he described as the 'gold' atmosphere at Welford Road.

Thorn was speaking after more than 22,000 Tigers fans roared the team onto a famous 25-21 victory against double European champions Toulon on Sunday.

“The atmosphere was gold,” says Thorn. “The whole package of big-time footie is just a joy. I feel comfortable. It’s my home.

“That crowd, I heard about the support and it’s real, it’s there and it’s a pleasure.

“In less than two months I am 40 and somehow I am here. The Lord has let me keep playing.

“You ask any 40-year-old to go out and play in front of a crowd like that in a big moment and all of them will put their hand up, and I’m no different.”

Thorn scored his first try for Tigers, following up Tom Youngs’ poaching to rumble over from close range.

“The last time I scored a try it was probably black and white TV,” Thorn joked. “I was commentating in my head because I haven’t scored in that long.

“Is Tom going to get this? Surely he’s not going to get it. Hang on, is he going to pop it to me? He’s popped it to me and I thought am I going to get to the line?

“I got there and I spent the next 10 seconds trying to breathe because I had guys jumping all over me. It was good fun.”

Tigers return home to Welford Road on Sunday, January 4, when Bath Rugby are the visitors in the Aviva Premiership. Match tickets are available now from the ticket office, on 0116 319 8888 (option 2) and online by clicking here.
