Tigers Cubs 'excited' for Yorkshire challenge, says Smith

Tigers Academy head coach Matt Smith admits there is a "tough challenge" awaiting the young Leicester side this Saturday in Yorkshire in Round 4 of this season's U18 League.

The 'Cubs' have started the season with three successive victories, including two at home, and are chasing a fourth straight at Otley Rugby Club on Saturday afternoon against the Yorkshire Carnegie Academy.

Smith named his side for the League fixture on Thursday afternoon, including several changes from the matchday squads who opened the new season, and admitted it was a chance for some new faces who have "earned" the opportunity.

"We’ve made a few changes based on giving opportunities to those who have not had as many so far and have earned them with their work on the training pitch," said Smith.

Smith also said he and his coaching staff have been pleased with winning start but, it's not what has been most pleasing for the management team.

It has been a pleasing start, to win all three so far, but what we need to continue to do is improve as we have each week so far," he said.

"That is what has been most pleasing, the improvement week on week."

Smith's also aware Saturday's long trip to Yorkshire presents a host of challenges for the young Tigers squad but believes the excitement amongst the players is a positive sign.

"Yorkshire will be a tough test for the lads," Smith said.

"It’s a long away trip and we need to be prepared for a tough challenge on the pitch, which we’re excited about."
