Leicester Tigers saluted the contribution of another sell-out Welford Road crowd in backing them all the way to a vital Guinness Premiership victory over Harlequins on Saturday.

After watching a nine-try thriller which secured a play-off away to Gloucester next Sunday, Tigers chairman Peter Tom said: “I would like to thank all of the supporters who played a massive part in another memorable and exciting Welford Road occasion.

“The level of support at Welford Road is known throughout the game and the support for the whole team today was fantastic. Everyone in the stands and the terrace made a great contribution, especially in those closing moments when the noise was absolutely deafening.”

Tigers captain Martin Corry, who led the team to a 31-28 victory sealed with a late Tom Varndell score, said: “The crowd were absolutely fantastic, there was a wall of noise and it definitely helped to spur us on. We knew we had to get the win and the crowd definitely helped us to that.”

Varndell grabbed two tries, with the clinching touchdown prompting amazing scenes around the ground, and said: “It was great to get the try for the team, it was a great win for us. The crowd were amazing.”
