Tigers on board as England go to World Cup

The 31-man England squad – including six players from Leicester Tigers – departed for the Rugby World Cup in Japan on Sunday after securing victory over Italy in the final warm-up fixture.

Tigers duo Ben Youngs and Ellis Genge were among the tryscorers at St James’ Park in Newcastle on Friday evening and the England squad reconvened to travel and begin the countdown to their opening game in the World Cup.

Scrum-half Youngs and clubmate Dan Cole are the most-capped members of the squad as they head to the third World Cup tournament of their careers.

They are joined by fellow Tigers academy graduates George Ford and Manu Tuilagi, and by wing Jonny May and World Cup debutant Genge in the squad selected by national team coach Eddie Jones.

“Our preparation has been very positive,” said Jones. “We're growing as a team on and off the field and if we use this next 10 or 12 days efficiently we'll be in an even stronger position."

England begin their tournament in Pool C with a game against Tonga – who include Tigers players Sione Kalamafoni and Telusa Veainu in their squad. Kick-off is at 11.15am UK time on Sunday, September 22 and there is an opportunity to follow all the action at our Kegs and Eggs event on the big screen in the Final Whistle at Welford Road.
