Leicester Tigers coaches praised the standard of rugby in the end of year Santander Alliance & Leicester Tag finals.

Leighfield Primary School in Uppingham were crowned the champions for 2010 in front of 24,000 spectators at Welford Road.

Leighfield, who won the Rutland title earlier this season, beat Frisby on the Wreake CofE School, the Melton champions, and Leicester city champions Christ the King Catholic School at the home of Leicester Tigers on Saturday.

They received their trophy and winners’ medals from Mefin Davies at half-time of Tigers’ Guinness Premiership game against Saracens on Saturday.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “It was a fantastic day and there was excellent rugby played.

“Congratulations must to all three schools on getting this far and for their part in a great day’s tag rugby. They were smiling while playing and were a credit to themselves and their schools.”

The round-robin tournament was played before kick-off in Tigers’ final home game of the regular Guinness Premiership season. Frisby beat Christ the King 8-7 in the opening game before Leighfield won 8-5 against Christ the King. Leighfield won the deciding game 9-7 to win the 2010 title.

Steph Sinclair, Leighfield School PE co-ordinator, said: “It was amazing. I am so proud of them – they were brilliant. They have really enjoyed it. It has been a terrific experience for them.”

Steve Wright, senior teacher at Frisby, added: “For such a small school to get this far, I think they have done excellently. I am so proud of them and they can be proud of themselves.”

Annabel Wheeldon, teacher at Christ the King, said: “The children all thoroughly enjoyed it. They have been really keen and the parents have been right behind it as well.

“A lot of the children hadn’t been to a rugby match before, so it has been a real experience for them.”
