Tigers present Team of the Year award

Leicester Tigers chief executive Simon Cohen presented the Team of the Year award to the Wilson Stuart School Table Cricket Team at the Birmingham Sports Awards 2017.

Taking place at Edgbaston cricket ground, the evening celebrated the sporting stories and successes from individuals and teams across the Birmingham and West Midlands region.

Tigers were the official sponsor of the Team of the Year award and Simon was joined by former Aston Villa and England footballer Tony Morley on stage to open the winning envelope.

Wilson Stuart School Table Cricket Team is made up of nine team members aged between 16 and 19 years. Table cricket allows disabled individuals to enjoy the sport and this season saw the team go unbeaten in 22 matches.

The triumph has seen them gain titles such as the CP Sport Community National League winners and the Lord’s Taveners Warwickshire champions, West Midlands champions and national champions for 2017.

On presenting the award, Simon said: “Tigers are best known as a professional rugby club but we work extensively in sport. We work in community sport, children’s sport and disabled sport to name a few and so we’re delighted to be involved and sponsor the Team of the Year award. Congratulations to all of tonight’s winners.”

The other nominees in the Team of the Year category included Big Ricks Swim Team based in Sutton Coldfield and semi-professional football club Solihull Moors FC.

Guests took part in a silent auction to help raise money for Rainbows Hospice, with items including signed photographs of Tigers legends Martin Johnson and Neil Back from England’s 2003 World Cup success.
