Guinness have announced that this weekend is Guinness Premiership Drinkaware Weekend in a bid to raise awareness of responsible drinking among rugby fans.

Guinness will be promoting the importance of responsible drinking through various activities for fans at grounds across the country, including ‘Tip-cards’ to remind fans of the importance of drinking responsibly.

Entitled ‘Tips for a Christmas to remember’, the cards contain practical tips, unit guidelines and links to a 24-hour helpline and drinkaware.co.uk.

Tips include ‘Avoid drinking on an empty stomach’, ‘Include soft drinks in your celebration’ and ‘Don’t leave yourself vulnerable – plan your journey home’, as well as tips for the morning after including ‘Drink plenty of water to rehydrate’, ‘Avoid ‘hair of the dog’ – it doesn’t work!’ and ‘Over-done it? Have two alcohol-free days’.

Lee Bailey, Guinness sponsorship manager, said: “Guinness has always been at the forefront of responsible drinking initiatives and having the Drinkaware Weekend demonstrates our commitment to making sure rugby fans know how to enjoy themselves without overdoing it. We are working with Drinkaware to find ways to tackle alcohol misuse. With such high-profile players lending their support, we hope to reach as many people as possible.”

Drinkaware’s CEO, Chris Sorek, said: “Drinkaware is delighted to support the Guinness Premiership’s responsible drinking weekend. By following Drinkaware’s tips – including drinking water to stay rehydrated – rugby fans can have a great festive season and start the New Year without the hangover of 2008.”
