Tigers trio earn England U-20 call-ups

Tigers youngsters Dan Cole, Ollie Dodge and Alex Shaw have been named in in the England U-20 squad for next Friday's U-21 Six Nations clash with Scotland. All three players featured in the U-19 World Cup in Dubai last year when England finished an impressive third behind only New Zealand and Australia.

Tigers centre Tom Youngs also played a prominent role in the 2006 World Cup, but a broken leg during the Boxing Day trip to London Irish ruled him out of contention this time around.

Head coach Nigel Redman has selected a 22-man squad for the match with Scotland at Bath's Recreation Ground on February 2, kick-off 7.30pm.

Redman and assistant coach Mark Mapletoft have drawn from nine Guinness Premiership clubs, with Tigers and London Wasps (Dominic Waldouck, Daniel Cipriani and Dave Doherty) providing three players apiece. The squad will train alongside Brian Ashton's first team at the University of Bath next week.

The Rugby Football Union, along with the other Home Unions, has switched from U-21 to U-20 this season. France and Italy are due to follow suit in 2008 when the first U-20 Six Nations Championship will be launched.

England follow their opener against Scotland by playing Italy U-21, again at the Rec (February 9), Ireland U-20 in Athlone (February 23), France U-21 at Northampton (March 9) and Wales U-20 at Newport (March 16).

"I firmly believe that we are looking at the players who will be in contention for England in the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups," says Redman. "These guys are probably halfway through a 10-year development process and to test themselves against the best in Europe at their age group is something I am looking forward to watching.

"This tournament will pose a different set of problems for them. Some of these guys have broken into their club first teams and are playing Guinness Premiership and European rugby which is fantastic, but I want to see how they get on having to make decisions without senior players around them."

RFU National Academy Director Conor O'Shea added: "The International Rugby Board are moving towards a single age grade Rugby World Cup as the best way forward for developing young players. We are fully supportive of this and have decided to move quickly and play an U-20 team this season in the U-21 Six Nations Championship. It gives some of our younger Intermediate National Academy players a competitive international environment to test themselves and we are all excited by the talent within the group."
